Desktops are less expensive than most laptops, because they do not have certain features that make them mobile. The disadvantage to these types of computers is that you cannot take them with you to the library or the coffee shop to work if you want a change of scenery.

The greatest advantage to having a laptop is its convenience. You can take it anywhere, so long as you have enough battery power and you take the power cord as a backup. Unfortunately, laptops have shorter life expectancies than desktop computers, so you might find yourself having to buy another computer during your college career. You might also find the smaller screen uncomfortable after a while.

The best computer for college ultimately depends on your personal preferences and your budget. If you are looking for a basic computer on a tight budget, then a desktop might be the best choice. On the other hand, if you have extra money and are looking for a more mobile solution, consider looking into a laptop.
